Doodles & Dandelions: How to Make a Dandelion Crown For Your Dog

Can you braid hair? Then making a dandelion crown for your sweet pup will be easy breezy. Here’s a peek at how Happy-Go-Doodle Chloe and I made a dandelion crown and had a joy-filled “doodle and dandelion” adventure together.

WHAT YOU’ll NEED:

  • One fun-loving dog
  • Large blanket placed in a sunny spot or under a shade tree
  • Bunch of sunshine-yellow dandelions
  • Phone or camera for pics
  • That’s it!

I picked dandelions with stems that were at least three inches long.

Happy Go-Doodle Chloe sat beside me on a blanket while I made the dandelion crown. Oh, and she barked at robins, got the springtime doodle zoomies, and played with her ball, too!

Tip: Dandelions can be a little messy. Choose a blanket or work surface that you don’t mind getting dirty.

Braiding dandelions is a lot like braiding hair.  If you’ve braided hair, then you’ve got this!

Here’s a short video showing how we created a dandelion braid. (Shout-out to Mother Nature for special appearances by scurrying ants and singing birds!)

The back of the braid is a pretty as the front…

The loose ends of the dandelions will stick out. I like that.

I arranged dandelions in pairs, so that I could quickly grab two at a time to add to the braid.

I finished the crown by looping the stems at the end of the braid around the dandelion blooms at the beginning of the braid. Tip: If needed, you can use an extra dandelion to tie the two ends of the braid together.

Our dandelion crown was perfectly imperfect!

Happy-Go-Doodle Chloe posed for some adorable quick pics! She has learned the “stay” command and held still while wearing the crown so that it wouldn’t fall off. Of course, it did anyway. But that was just as fun!  Those silly, “you crack me up, Dood!” moments are simply the best.  It was pure “doodle and dandelion” joy.

Here are a few outtakes…

For real. Chloe dropped her favorite tennis ball on top of the dandelion crown, so we put the “crowning touch” on our day with a fun-filled game of fetch!

P.S. While Chloe had no interest in eating dandelions, I read up on dandelions and learned that they are non-toxic for dogs. However, dandelions can sometimes be treated with chemicals. Pick them from a location that hasn’t been treated.

  2. You look so pretty, Chloe & your Mom is very crafty! What a great way to spend the day outside & to recycle dandelions! I’ll send you some if you want. I see them growing out my window. I think Bessie, my minion, would wear a flower crown, but me – I don’t like things placed on my head much. A rose crown would look pretty on you I bet, too.

    1. Thanks, Valentine! We did have a happy day outside! Maybe you and your mom could make a crown or a bracelet together for her to wear on Mother’s Day!?! I’m glad you stopped by! EnJOY your weekend!

  3. Chloe, you and your mom added sunshine to my day! I look forward to hearing about your adventures. Since I don’t have a pet, I will enjoy your blog posts even more!

  6. OKAY I must do this before the dandelions go away! I’ve always loved dandelions. I’m pretty sure Gonzo would wear and crown and it would look phenomenal on his black fur. Will would eat it. For sure.

  13. Very cute! Dandelions are one my favorites, even though so many people think of them as weeds. Besides the pretty flowers, the seeds are so much fun!

We used to make crowns by tying the flowers together, but the braids are much prettier.

    1. Thanks, Beth!
We saw lots of dandelions going to seed when we were at the park. Mom took lots of pictures of them, but I was busy keeping a lookout for squirrels.
      Happy you stopped by!
